1. Building Sculptures with Architectural Foam
Learn how to make relatively lightweight sculptural forms to mosaic, from the hobbyist to the professional interested in public art. This is a messy, hands-on workshop and you will create a piece to take home. In this process you will experience a variety of techniques to work with polystyrene foam, then cover it in plastic mesh and enhanced cement thinset. Cecilia will address the ways in which this process can be adapted for the use of armatures for larger and more complex forms.
All materials will be provided including architectural foam,
but you are to bring the following:
• gloves, mask, 2 small buckets
• palette, spatula for spreading adhesive
• small foam sponges, rag (not terry cloth,
but smooth texture like an old T shirt)
• rough wood rasp, sharp knife, hack saw blade, box knife
• Sack Lunch
WHEN: March 31, Tuesday 10 - 4pm
COST: $200
2. Make Your Own Custom Mosaic Tiles
This intensive workshop is for those serious mosaicists who want to create their own unique low-fire tiles and mosaic. You will make and glaze approximately 2 square feet of mosaic. First we will learn how to roll out clay, minimize warping, then cut tiles. You will then be provided bisque (previously fired tiles) and learn several glazing and underglazing techniques. Materials will be provided. Methods for using these tiles as mosaic will also be demonstrated. Cecilia and Leena will fire your own glazed tiles, and they will be available for pick up approximately one week later. Please bring a sack lunch, there will be a 30 minute break at noon.
WHEN: April 1, Wednesday 10am - 3pm
COST: $165
3. Applying Mosaic to Foam/Concrete Sculptures
This one day workshop will instruct students in covering the sculptures they have made in the first workshop, Building Sculptures with Architectural Foam. The focus will be on tesserae, tile and other vitreous objects that create a durable outdoor sculpture, suitable for all weather, including freeze/thaw conditions. Participants are asked to bring the following:
• gloves, mask, 2 small buckets,
• palette, spatula for spreading adhesive
• small foam sponges, rag (not terry cloth, but like an old T shirt)
• tile nippers, glass cutters if you are interested in using stained glass as mosaic, if you have any tile, mosaic, glass, stone you would like to use on your sculpture
• Sack Lunch
Adhesive, tiles, glass and some miscellaneous mosaic objects will
be provided and included in the cost of the class.
WHEN: April 7, Tuesday 10am - 4 pm
COST: $175
4. Using Mosaic on Found Objects
This is a workshop is a one day workshop. In the morning you will learn how to prepare a wood frame and a terra cotta pot for mosaic. Both of these techniques will enable you to cover almost
anything you might ever want. Materials for preparing the objects (a wood frame, no larger than 12” x 12” and a terra cotta pot, no larger than 12” tall) will be provided. In the afternoon we will teach you about the adhesives for covering the prepared frame and pot and how to apply the mosaic. Cecilia will demonstrate how to grout a pre-prepared piece. Adhesives will be provided. Participants are asked to bring the following:
• gloves, mask, 2 small buckets
• palette, spatula for spreading adhesive
