Textiles and embroidery
This work of altered memorabilia evolves from my childhood, which was rooted with one foot in the sometimes idyllic 1950's and the liberating 1960's. Many of the textiles I use have been passed down to me from both sides of my family, others rescued from thrift stores and yard sales and kept for a ridiculous amount of time before they find a voice and place the pieces that you see here. I like to believe that my work comes from a kind of sensitivity that wants to not let go of the nostalgia that is inevitably attached to these obsolete textiles, but speaks to the world where we find ourselves Today. Most of the textiles are vintage, many parts fabricated by me and all tediously embroidered, appliquéd and often painted. The text is stream of consciousness, usually affected not only by the object(s) but by current events as I experience these days. |
